How the measurement works technically

Trick question: there is no universal "good" HRV.

As an order of magnitude (nocturnal HRV, RMSSD metric, in milliseconds):
- Sedentary adult: 20 to 50 ms
- Active adult: 40 to 80 ms
- Endurance athlete: 70 to 150 ms
But what really counts is your personal trend, not the absolute value.
An HRV going from 45 to 65 ms in 6 weeks is a very strong signal. An HRV of 80 ms dropping to 50 ms in 3 days is also a very strong signal.
It is the comparison with yourself over time that carries the useful information.

For a long time, HRV was a tool reserved for elite athletes.

Sleep
Lever number 1, by far. Regular, sufficient, quality sleep improves HRV more than any other lever.
Daily slow breathing
Heart coherence (5 minutes, 3 times a day) is the most studied protocol. Measurable effect on HRV in 3 to 4 weeks.
Cold exposure
Cold shower or cold water immersion. Vagus nerve activation, documented HRV improvement.
Reducing alcohol

Common interpretation mistakes
Comparing your HRV to other people's
HRV is highly individual. Comparing your HRV to a friend's, a colleague's or an athlete's makes no sense. Only your own trend counts.
Over-interpreting an isolated reading
A low HRV one morning means nothing. A low HRV for 2 weeks is a signal. Always read trends, never single points.
Becoming obsessive
HRV is a tool, not a goal. If you start checking your HRV every morning with anxiety, the opposite effect kicks in: your measurement stress lowers your HRV.
Confusing HRV and fitness
High HRV is not synonymous with good physical shape. You can have high HRV and poor cardiovascular condition. And vice versa.
Ignoring context
Menstrual cycle, travel, late meal, fever, medication: all of it affects HRV. Before interpreting, check the context.
